October 22, 2019, I returned home from an amazing trip to Vancouver and placed my passport on the shelf in our safe already excited about taking it back out to head to Amsterdam on March 18, 2020. Guess what? My passport is still sitting on that shelf in the safe. My passport hasn’t moved and I haven’t traveled to far off lands for new and exciting adventures. I may not have left home with that passport but, oh my, have there been new and exciting experiences.
When I realized that I was not going to be getting on that plane to Amsterdam in March the grief I felt was deep. I was ready for an escape from my “real” life because what had been my “real” life was no longer a reality. My marriage had just ended, I was searching for a new career and my mental health was suffering. I had an overwhelming fear of the huge changes that were on the horizon for me.
My mind kept wandering to my passport sitting on that dark shelf locked away; it was stuck, unable to move, just like I was. Stuck, that’s how I felt. Stuck in a situation I didn’t feel I could get out of, stuck in a job search for a job I didn’t want and stuck in this feeling of absolute terror. Then…. I was sitting in therapy working through all of my emotions around everything going on, not just in my life but in the bigger world too. My therapist looked at me and said “I know what you should do. You should be a coach.” In that moment my whole perspective began to shift.
That afternoon I sat in front of the computer searching coach training programs and what coaching was all about. There was so much information, so what did I do? I reached out to my friend Lesley who has been a successful coach for years. At the time of our conversation, I didn’t realize what was happening; she was coaching me through what a career as a coach would mean to me and to my family. For the first time in years, I saw a future I was truly and deeply excited about. I no longer felt stuck, I saw a whole new adventure in front of me.
Three weeks later I was sitting in my closet training to become a coach. Yes, my closet. I was on Zoom with others ready to transform their lives and shift the energy of the world around them. The excitement and desire to learn was palpable even through a computer screen. I really felt I had found a place that I belong and a chance to create the life I wanted for myself and my children. Not only was I no longer stuck, I was moving and growing. Those three 10-hour days changed me forever; changed not because I learned things and met new people, but because of all the possibilities I saw.
“Faith is more powerful than truth.” That is one of iPEC’s foundation principles and it hit me like a ton of bricks. What had felt like my truth of not being successful had shifted to a level of faith I had never felt. Faith that everything was going to be fine; well, not just fine, that I was going to thrive. A sense of peace had taken the place of terror and I knew I was exactly where I was because it was exactly where I needed to be.
I discovered that I was getting in my own way. I had limited myself and believed the voice in my head that I wasn’t enough. That I wasn’t good enough, smart enough, talented enough, strong enough to create a future for myself that would give me all the things I wanted to live the life of my dreams. That voice held me back and when I stopped listening to Daryll (yes, I named that voice) I saw a world of infinite possibilities.
If you believed that you had the power to change your life to be what you always dreamed of what would it look like? What would change for you if you didn’t put limits on yourself? What would you do differently if you took away the fear of failing and believed that you cannot make a mistake? What if you believed in your own infinite potential? I mean truly believed it with every ounce of your being?
Through coaching I saw my energy shift and in turn my world view began to shift. Coaching provides the chance to see all that is possible for you and create a plan to move you towards the dream life you want. It’s not a magic pill that works immediately and definitely requires work and self-reflection; it does provide you a safe space to explore what you want and to create that incredible life you’ve always imagined. If you are ready to dive in and see how you can change your energy schedule a discovery session and realize what is possible for you.
